Ocean Policy Officer WWF European Policy Programme Brussels, Belgium

We are looking for a full time Ocean Policy Officer who will be responsible for supporting the implementation of WWF Blueprint for a Sustainable European Policy Agenda, with a focus on protecting marine biodiversity.

She/he will coordinate closely with WWF offices in European countries to link EU and national strategies. S/he acts as a Brussels-based policy advocate vis-à-vis relevant European Union (EU) and European Commission (EC) institutions, and represents WWF before external audiences and within WWF’s network. S/he helps coordinate the related activities of WWF offices in Europe.

Main responsibilities:

Policy and Advocacy with Brussels institutions on marine biodiversity policies

  • Work under the WWF MSP strategic plan including strong advocacy to ensure that there’s space for nature in EU Member States national plans;
  • Integrate the marine biodiversity component in the MSP, MPA, offshore windfarm and MSFD work and engage actively with European Commission, and others where needed;
  • Follow the work of the relevant European Parliament committees, mostly the environmental committee (ENVI), fisheries committee (PECH) and ITRE related to the protection of marine biodiversity;
  • Represent WWF in European Commission expert groups;
  • Ensure coherence with WWF positions and coordinate with other EPO policy officers on sustainable fisheries, climate change and other ocean governance issues related to the protection and the restoration of biodiversity;
  • Review the European marine policies, legislation and regulations governing MPA and restoration areas management to propose required amendments or improvements;
  • Prepare policy advocacy plans for the revision of EU laws;
  • Act as focal point for marine teams in national offices regarding the EU nature restoration law and work closely with Biodiversity team;

Coordination with WWF European network

  • Share best practices and challenges from regional sea basins to increase the synergize and attention on urgency for Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) MSP at national and regional level;
  • Promote the benefits of a sustainable blue economy and how nature based solutions contributes to this agenda;
  • Maintain close co-operation with other NGOs actively engaged in MSP and MPA networks implementation.

What you need:

Required Qualifications and skills

  • Degree or advanced technical qualifications relevant to the field of marine conservation;
  • 3-5 years professional experience in policy advocacy in Europe;
  • An ability to interpret and analyse technical scientific, social and economic marine and maritime data and apply it to WWF’s biodiversity conservation work;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to communicate complicated messages authoritatively and succinctly to different audiences and through different fora (e.g. policy briefs, presentations). Additional European languages advantageous;
  • Strong networking and team skills appropriate for a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment;
  • Proven ability to act as organizational spokesperson and interact effectively with government representatives; significant experience interacting with fishing industry would be a strong advantage;
  • Experience of working on maritime spatial planning, and understanding the complexities of EU marine biodiversity legislation;
