EIF Trainee – Economic Researcher – Research & Market Analysis Division

Specific Post Environment:

By developing and offering targeted financial products to its intermediaries, the European Investment Fund (EIF) enhances SME access to finance and fosters EU objectives, notably in the field of entrepreneurship, growth, innovation, research and development, employment, and regional development.

The Research & Market Analysis (RMA) team supports the EIF’s business development and strategic decision-making processes through applied research, market analyses, surveys, and economic impact assessments. RMA works as advisor, participates in international fora, and liaises with many organizations and institutions concerning research on SME finance.

You will be part of the RMA Division, which is part of EIF’s General Secretariat Department.

Overall objective:

You will mainly contribute to RMA’s survey projects, i.e. European-wide surveys of venture capital (VC), private equity mid-market (PE MM), private debt (PD) fund managers, and business angels (BAs).

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of your Supervisor(s), you will:

  • Analyse survey data;
  • Support the preparation of related reports, presentations and working papers;
  • Support the preparation of new survey waves;
  • Contribute to RMA’s general research & market analysis tasks, when relevant to the scope of the project.

Expected outcome:

Based on the EIF VC, BA, PE MM and PD surveys, the internship will allow you to participate in the production of reports (e.g., EIF Working Papers), presentations and datasets.

Qualifications:

  • University degree (preferably a Master’s level, or on-going postgraduate studies at advanced stage), in the field of Finance or (Business) Economics, or other similar.

Competencies:

Technical/Professional Knowledge & Skills required:

  • Some knowledge and understanding of EIF’s mission, activities and products and of markets and legal frameworks relevant to EIF business, as well as policies and priorities in that context;
  • Familiarity with investment practices in the PE/VC/PD and/or BA sphere will be considered an advantage but is not a prerequisite.

Experience required:

  • Ease with IT applications and data analyses, reports and presentations. Thorough knowledge of standard Microsoft IT applications, in particular Excel. Familiarity with statistical software packages (Stata) and/or Python programming is a plus.

General Competencies required:

  • Good analytical, drafting and synthesis skills;
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of further EU languages considered an asset;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to work productively;
  • Demonstrate initiative, capability to work autonomously under given objectives and time constraints; organise own work effectively;
  • Prior experience in Banking/Finance would be a plus.
